Feb 3 Issue of 'Science' regarding Prediction

Some members may be interested in the Feb 3 issue of Science which has a special section on Prediction including: "Prediction and explanation in social systems", and "Predicting human behavior: The next frontiers".

The articles are brief but interesting.

Re: Can anyone help me solve this simulation problem

I haven't looked carefully, but one thing that you should do (in model 2) first is decrease the time step. The oscillations will disappear (although such a model can have oscillations).

Re: A problem with the simulation

I assume you have had several replies to this question. Actually your model is correct IF the personnel department does NOT take into account the retiring workers when they are making hiring decisions. If you believe that the personnel dept does recognize retiring workers then you need to add hiring...

Re: downloadable conference papers - a good idea

Sorry for the long delay, but here are some additional comments about the advisability of making SD conference papers available for download. I think that papers that are to be presented at the SD conference should be available for download prior to the conference for the following reasons: 1) This ...

Re: papers from the Delft conference

Len and others: I must say that I am a bit disappointed at this new policy (that of not posting full papers from the conference). I find having access to the full papers helps greatly in understanding a complex problem that cannot be gotten across in a15 or 20 minute presentation. I certainly unders...

Model of Dairy Feed Nutrition

I thought that those of you interested in the application of system dynamics to real world problems might be interested in the dissertation recently completed by Ryan Higgs in Cornell's Department of Animal Science. About a year ago Higgs suggested I come over to look at the SD work he was doing but...

Re: Consumption and Production Decisions

There is a special issue of Ecology and Society that might give you some ideas even though it is about semi-arid systems. The link is at: http://www.ecologyandsociety.org/issues/view.php?sf=52 The first paper: "Anticipating Vulnerability to Climate Change in Dryland Pastoral Systems: Using Dynamic S...

Re: Teaching SD to blind people

That is a very interesting question. I can imagine that there might be a way to do this conceptually using sound... especially if the person is musical. But musical complexity probably goes beyond, or is different from, the type of complexity we think of in SD.

Re: about articles published in the last april june review

Only slightly off topic I provide here a link to a paper I intended to present at our meeting in 2008 which I ended up not attending. Implicit Minimum Requirements for First Draft Models also Provide a Starting Point for Better Reviews, and Quality, of Academic Models The purpose was to separate req...

re: Open Access Journals

John Sterman recently posted a comment under "announcements" related to open access publishing and in particular to the very interesting articles in a recent issue of Science related to this topic. In case you missed it here is the link to that announcement . Since there is no way to comment under "...
