Re: Help with lining up data and time step

A completely different approach (and not an answer to your original question) would be to have some sort of rainfall simulator as part of the model. Your data perhaps gives a seasonal pattern over 32 years. But we would not expect to see a an exact repeat of that if we could repeat that 32 years. Th...

Re: QUERY: Personal experience and reflection on RoadMaps

Eliot: I am somewhat surprised that you haven't had a response to your query yet. I took an internet based course via MIT in the late 1990s that made use of Road Maps (and quite a bit of other material). It was called the guided study program and, as I understand it, was taught via a seminar at MIT ...

Re: Open Access Publishing - Is the time now?

Navid's point is well taken. In fact that this is the reason the society has not moved toward open access in the past. The journal publisher, Wiley, shares some of the Journal subscription fees with the society and these fees support the System Dynamic Society's operations. Wiley also provides membe...

Open Access Publishing - Is the time now?

I recently read Peter Suber's recent book "Open Access" (Suber, P., 2012. Open access. MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, USA.) Copies of this book were made freely available to all faculty and Grad students at Cornell University by the university library. The library purchases thousands of journal subscript...

Re: time as a resource: modeling decisions about its use

I like Bill's comment. Time does not accumulate, but our "perception of time available for tasks" certainly does dissipate, and I can even save time for that important meeting. I imagine that at the beginning of the week I have so many hours available for various tasks and I (may) plan accordingly. ...

Re: time as a resource: modeling decisions about its use

The ideas imbedded in the market share molecule seems like one useful approach. So, instead of products we could use "activities" and instead of these activities being affected by price and delivery delays they could be influenced by such things as perceived importance and, importantly, time availab...

time as a resource: modeling decisions about its use

I am anticipating some problems advising students regarding an current class project which is a thinking tool for some upcoming fieldwork. They are interested in factors that determine how people in rural villages make decisions about how much time they will spend on various activities: e.g. weeding...

Re: Looking for Pastoralist and Livestock models?

Strangely, just searching for something completely different I came across this "synthesis paper" which although not about system dynamics modeling as such it is about pastoral system dynamics and includes quite a bit of observation and discussion useful to modeling such systems. Ellis, J.E., Swift,...

Re: Looking for Pastoralist and Livestock models?

Travis: Regarding Picardi's dissertation, you might also be interested in looking at Peter Taylor's book (Taylor PJ. 2005. Unruly complexity: ecology, interpretation, engagement. Chicago: University of Chicago Press.) I first obtained this book because Taylor provides a lot of discussion about polit...
