3rd Brazilian Symposium (October 16-17, 2015)

Post by Aldo Zagonel » Wed Jun 24, 2015 6:29 am

The Brazil Chapter will hold its 3rd Symposium on October 16-17, 2015, in São Paulo.

On Friday, October 16, there will be presentations and discussions focusing on papers submitted. We encourage submission of applied work in progress.

On Saturday, October 17, there will be a full-day workshop with Karim Chichakly and Andy Ford, focusing on engaging stakeholders and clients in applied modeling. The instructors will share their experiences and facilitate thread-based discussions aimed at promoting the impact and quality of ongoing and potential applications. The threads will be chosen based upon submissions, and the interests of modelers and model users in attendance.

We welcome submissions in Portuguese, but it will be advantageous to the authors to submit their papers in English. Submission summaries (600-800 words) shall be emailed to simposioDS@gmail.com by July 6.

Please help publicize the symposium by downloading, printing and posting the announcement and call for papers, attached. Feel free to forward.

Edmilson Moraes, Host
Marciano Morozowski, Program Chair
Karim Chichakly, Workshop Chair

The 3rd Brazilian Symposium, on October 16-17, 2015, is shaping up well. We received 25 submissions and, due to requests for extension, decided to push the deadline for summaries (600-800 words) to this Friday, July 10th.

A few themes are shaping up and will likely be the focus of our efforts to engage stakeholders and clients in applied system dynamics modeling:

- on energy (including ethanol production, biomass distributed generation, and solar photovoltaics);
- climate change, water shortages, and the energy-water-environment nexus in general;
- on corruption (which will be timely, no thanks to Petrobras and FIFA);
- on heath care and management;
- and participatory modeling, to name a few.

Most of the submissions were in English, although Portuguese is also acceptable. To our surprise, we received four submissions by authors not associated with the Brazil Chapter, from Spain, India (2) and Iran. Thank you for your interest!

In addition to the papers selected from submissions, there will be five high-level presentations by foreign experts, to be delivered in person (2-4) or via the web.

Thank you for your help spreading our call for papers far and wide.

The Brazil Chapter opened registration for "Creating and Sustaining Client Interest" Symposium and Workshop:

(Program attached.)

We acknowledge and thank sponsorship received from the Society's Strengthening the Field Fund (StFF) and São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), and support from FEI University who will host the event, and isee systems who is helping with online registration.

We highlight assistance from foreign-guests Karim Chichakly, Andy Ford, Markus Schwaninger, and Isaac Dyner, who have been involved in all aspects, as well as colleagues who served as reviewers: Amarildo Fernandes, Bruce Skarin, Gary Hirsch, Joaquim dos Santos, João Arantes, Josué de Medeiros, Júlio Figueiredo, Roberto Protil, Rudolf Flunger, and Silvia Ulli-Beer.

We thank the authors of 40 proposals and apologize for not being able to include all --although, everyone is welcome!

This is an opportunity for learning, discussing with colleagues, and enjoying personal contact with experts. We were inspired by the Winter Camp with adaptations: public call for papers, open/collegial review process, and training workshop.

Marciano Morozowski serves as program chair. Our host will be Edmilson Moraes.
