Environmental SIG 2013 Update

Post by Asmeret Naugle » Thu Aug 01, 2013 6:24 pm

To the Environmental SIG of the System Dynamics Society:

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Environmental SIG activities at the System Dynamics Conference last week. The conference went really well, and some great research was presented on environmental topics. We also had a very productive meeting of the Environmental SIG, and we wanted to update you on a few things we discussed.

There are two ways we discussed to keep in contact with other SIG members.

• The LinkedIn group, called “Environmental Special Interest Group of the System Dynamics Society”
o http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2158 ... g_ugrp_ovr
• The system dynamics forum, at http://systemdynamics.org/forum/
o There is an “Energy and Environment” thread, and many others
o You can check the forum online, or sign up for email updates by clicking ‘User Control Panel’ in the upper left, clicking the ‘Digest’ tab on the right, and selecting your desired options. You can use the ‘Forums Selection’ option on the left to choose the forums you’re interested in.

There is some interest in putting together a regular webinar for SIG members (including students) to present their work and get feedback from other participants. If you are interested in participating or helping to organize something like this, let us know.

We also want to encourage SIG members to organize sessions at other major conferences throughout the year. There are often quite a few of us at conferences like AGU, ESA, AWRA, ISEE, etc., and more might be interested if sessions focused on system dynamics or similar work were available.

We are hoping to encourage more interaction on both LinkedIn and the forum this year. Here are a few ideas about what you might want to share with the group:

• Let people know about papers you are publishing. A lot of folks in the SIG are likely to be interested!
• Find people who are interested in putting together conference sessions on environmental system dynamics work, or publicize your sessions.
• Ask for advice when new topics. There might be people doing similar work who can point you in the right direction for literature reviews, potential collaborators, etc.
• Bring up questions and ideas about system dynamics and environmental issues.
• Find people who are interested in working together on a specific environmental or sustainability issue using system dynamics.

The System Dynamics Society also wants us to remind you that they are looking for nominations for the Jay Wright Forrester Award (the society’s award for the best contribution to the field of system dynamics during the preceding five years). If you know of any great SD applications, please submit them at http://conference.systemdynamics.org/jwf/.

Apologies if you get multiple copies of this message – we’re trying to reach as many SIG members as we can.

Your environmental SIG representatives,

Asmeret Bier
Nicolás Escalante Mora
Bobby Jeffers
