Step-by-Step Guide
From WikiSD
- Familiarize yourself with the general tabs on the Wiki page
- Log in
- Editing requires that you log in using the User ID and Password that you log into the System Dynamics Web Submission System. If you do not have an account on that system you may go to the Web Submission Log on Page to obtain one. Note also that if you wish to make any changes to your User ID or Password you will need to do so from that page.
- Edit or create the page you wish to contribute to
- Consult the MediaWiki Contents Guide for information on editing wiki pages.
- The Contents Guide is rather comprehensive and can be a bit overwhelming. A shorter intro can be found at How to edit a page.
- Even faster though is just find a page that needs editing and duplicage the formatting already used on the page.
- If you're going to contribute to WikiSD a great place to start might be creating your own User Page.
- Create New Page Just type the page name in the search box on the left and click G0. If the page already exists you'll be taken to it. If the page doesn't exist you'll be taken to a page that allows you to create the new page. Also see section below on Namespaces.
- Uploading Images Be careful not to accidentally overwrite images already in use. The system will advise you if another image already exists by the same name. Each image gets its own page so you can go to the image page and review the one that already exists, as well as where it's being used.
- Show preview to review your changes
- Save page to save your changes
Using Show preview and Save page often is a good idea to ensure something doesn't inadvertently happen and you loose your work. Remember, it's a web page.
Namespaces
It is possible to create collections of content using Namespaces, which has some advantages and disadvantages. To see the Namespaces that exist click the Search button on the left of the screen. Namespaces are only searched if you explicitly indicate they are to be searched in Advanced search. As such, content placed in Namespaces will not be initially searched when someone uses the search field on the left of the screen. Thus, to provide maximum visibility of content is seems that using Namespaces, such as WikiSD: defeats the purpose somewhat. Though creating your User Page in the User: namespace does make sense because WikiSD keeps track of all your changes based on your login ID, which is your email address, and someone should be able to find you by that referece. See also: User Page.
That's about it:-)
Enjoy making WikiSD live like an organization, or maybe even better.
