2023 Conference Invitation Letter Requests

2023 Conference Invitation Letter Requests

We can’t wait to see you in Chicago for the 2023 International System Dynamics Conference. Due to long United States visa appointment waiting times at American embassies and consulates worldwide, the Society has started issuing Invitation Letters to 2023 Conference attendees.

Note that you do NOT need a visa to enter the United States if you’re a citizen of the European Union or countries in the Visa Waiver Program. You can check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate here.

To request your Invitation Letter you must be a current member of the Society and provide us with an abstract. This statement of no more than 250 words should describe your participation in the 2023 Conference. Please mention any work you plan to submit to the conference program and/or how System Dynamics is related to your current study program or work.

Each person requesting an Invitation Letter must fill out a separate form. All letters will be sent in PDF format to the email address provided. Please include in the notes if a paper letter is required. Allow 7-10 business days for your Invitation Letter to be processed. If you do not receive your letter within this time period contact us for assistance.

We regard the right to deny any request we believe to be fake and to ask for more information regarding the company or affiliation of the attendee to ensure the validity of requests. Please reach out to conference@systemdynamics.org with any issues.

Jay Forrester Seminar Series
Mini-Courses to Develop System Dynamics Skills

The Jay Forrester Seminar Series consists of lectures and discussions conducted by the founder of the field with his Ph.D. students in the fall of 1999 at the MIT Sloan School of Management. The series was recorded by Susan Forrester and the Society used to handle this resource in a DVD.

For the past year, a group of volunteers has been working on this valuable material. They completely revamped the series into a more accessible, on-demand, online course.

A total of 11 courses will be available throughout the next months. Three of them have been released already!  Select from rich and engaging mini-courses with discussion questions to interact with other students, quizzes to test your knowledge, and readings to dive deeper. The first mini-course is free for everyone!

Mini-Courses are FREE for Society members | $25 for non-members.

Statement from System Dynamics Society

Statement from System Dynamics Society

Our hearts go out to those who are suffering because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. There are many Ukrainian practitioners of System Dynamics, and we hope they will be able to continue work in the field. To help with this, the System Dynamics Society is waiving conference fees for all those from Ukraine who are able to attend this year’s conference either in person or virtually. We are also waiving Society membership fees. We have asked the Program Chairs for this year’s conference and the System Dynamics Review Editor to highlight the work of Ukrainians. For those who seek financial support for research projects and other activities in System Dynamics, we are prioritizing applications by Ukrainians to the Strengthening the Field Fund.

The Society will also cease association with all organizations and activities supporting or facilitating Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and ensure there are no connections on our website or other publications.

The scale of loss in this conflict is enormous, and much of it is irreversible. While the System Dynamics Society can only play a very small part in helping, we want our colleagues from Ukraine to know that we stand with them.

Actions

  1. Waive conference fees for anyone from Ukraine (virtual or in-person).
  2. Waive Society membership fees for anyone from Ukraine through the end of 2023.
  3. Encourage Ukrainian Society members to work with the STFF to create appropriate proposals.
  4. Encourage journal editor and conference Program Chairs to highlight contributions by Ukrainians.
  5. Stop association with all organizations and activities supporting or facilitating Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and ensure there are no connections on our website or other publications.

The statement and accompanying actions were approved by the Policy Council of the System Dynamics Society on April 6th, 2022.

Donella (Dana) Meadows was an inspiring leader, scholar, writer, teacher, a Pew Scholar in Conservation and Environment, and a MacArthur Fellow, and was one of the most influential environmental thinkers of the twentieth century. After receiving a Ph.D. in biophysics from Harvard, she joined a team at MIT applying the relatively new tools of System Dynamics to global problems. While Donella Meadows researched and wrote about global problems, she herself also practiced local solutions, a living personification of Rene Dubos’ famous expression, “Think Globally, Act Locally.”

Donella’s ideas, insights, teachings, environmental leadership, and belief in the capacity of humans to create a sustainable world continue to inspire and motivate us today.

Visit the Donella Meadows Project by the Academy for Systems Change to learn more about Dana’s life and work.

DONELLA MEADOW’S BOOKS

Dana wrote and co-authored several books, including the following:

Twenty years after their influential book Limits to Growth was published to worldwide acclaim, the authors revise several scenarios of growth, concluding that the global industrial system has already overshot some of the Earth’s vital ecological limits.

Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update is a warning that overshoot cannot be sustained without collapse. But there is reason to believe that humanity can still reverse some of its damage to Earth if it takes appropriate measures to reduce inefficiency and waste.

The Electronic Oracle investigates the practice and impact of systems analysis and computer modeling, particularly as applied to social policy. Case studies of nine models address issues of economic development, resources, and the environment.

$35

2 in stock (can be backordered)

This book brings systems thinking out of the realm of computers and equations and into the tangible world, showing how to develop the systems-thinking skills that thought leaders across the globe consider critical for 21st-century life.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a public health researcher and System Dynamics consultant. I currently specialize in community-based participatory approaches using System Dynamics modeling, group model building, and qualitative research for building equitable social and health outcomes for young people. I will be joining the Dartington Service Design Lab, based out of the United Kingdom, as a Senior Researcher specializing in systems thinking in January of 2022.

I have a passion for working with community stakeholders to improve the development and implementation of social services to ensure that they are both empowering and impactful within the communities they serve.

I recently graduated from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis where I earned a Master of Social Work with a concentration in International Social and Economic Development and specialization in System Dynamics. During my graduate degree program, I collaborated with community partners to apply systems-based approaches to uncover barriers and develop interventions to improve access to HIV care for people living in St. Louis in the region. Before coming to the Brown School, I was a program coordinator for Health Equity International, working in the field of Global Health in southern Haiti. I also earned my Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at Boston College.

Can you tell us about your most recent System Dynamics project? What insights did you learn? Why do you think System Dynamics was an important tool in understanding that problem?

In continuation of my work in my Community-Based System Dynamics (CBSD) course, I collaborated with Fast-Track Cities St. Louis to implement a series of community-based group model building sessions to uncover some of the barriers to accessing rapid initiation of antiretroviral therapy for people living with HIV. The participatory sessions centered on the experiences and voices of community stakeholders living with HIV and healthcare providers in the region. Community-Based System Dynamics provided us with the tools and activities to guide the participatory sessions as well as help to uncover the system of HIV care in the region to find leverage points for creating sustainable change.

Through using System Dynamics and participatory group model building throughout the workshops we were able to break down some of the traditional power dynamics and barriers to system change for health equity. Centering community voices, we were able to gain greater insight into the dynamic factors impacting access to HIV medication in the region. Most notably, we were able to uncover dynamics in the system of medical care delivery that was being reinforced by current models of care and grant funding. This opened the space for dialogue about mental models surrounding care with healthcare providers and researchers that are a part of the Fast-Track Cities St. Louis collaborative. These sessions helped to lay the groundwork for continued community partnership for improving HIV care in the region—I am excited to see how the work is taken forward!

What advice would you give other students who are interested in doing either System Dynamics/Community Based System Dynamics (CBSD) related work?

First, I would suggest learning and applying your system dynamics skills to issues that you are particularly passionate about. System Dynamics, and particularly CBSD, can open so many possibilities for new understanding and insight. Something I love about community-based system dynamics is the opportunity for new discovery—you never really know what to expect when you start to build a causal loop diagram with a new group! I love how this challenges me as a practitioner to constantly be shifting my mental models. When you engage CBSD work in a topic you are passionate about, I think there are so many opportunities for personal and professional growth alongside the objectives of the project.

Second, ask for help/support/second opinions/collaboration, etc.—System Dynamics thrives on multiple perspectives and insights! I owe so much of my personal growth in the field of System Dynamics to my mentors, classmates, and colleagues. Whether it be for a quick consultation or help to facilitate a workshop, I have found the system dynamics community to be incredibly supportive and resourceful.
