DIVERSITY

The 2022 SD Conference theme is “Diversity” and we embrace this theme in all its dimensions. Diversity in teams encourages innovation and enhances decision-making and problem-solving. We thus expect (i) speakers from diverse backgrounds, (ii) submissions on topics such as gender, race or ethnicity, class, age and ability, etc., and (iii) submissions that demonstrate diverse ways of doing System Dynamics.

From the very beginning, System Dynamics has dared to be different. At the same time, there seems to be potential for a greater celebration of diversity. With the 2022 conference, we want to uncover this hidden potential. There are interesting questions to ask such as: How do race, class, gender, ethnicity, ability, etc. intersect and shape society? How do qualitative and quantitative modelling intersect and shape the ‘field’ of System Dynamics? How can System Dynamics work with and learn from related approaches? How can the experience of a diversity of practitioners be leveraged to increase the use of System Dynamics? How do we create and select teaching materials with a diverse gender, national and ethnic representation?

Diversity will be a special conference thread this year. Original submissions oriented to the conference theme may offer fresh perspectives on diversity with regards to the place of application, aspects of diversity in society, diverse ways of doing System Dynamics, and many more. Of course, we equally welcome original contributions to any of the other conference threads which are described more fully below.

We envision ISDC 2022 to be an inclusive conference for everybody to enjoy.

Seasoned instructors and teaching assistants provide in-depth instruction in this intensive course covering all aspects of System Dynamics simulation modeling. Both introductory and intermediate tracks are available to suit different learning levels.

Student-Organized Colloquium

A one-day event organized by the Student Chapter of the System Dynamics Society held on the first day of the Conference. It promotes dialogue among system dynamicists of varying fields, levels of training, and backgrounds and creates spaces to have meaningful conversations about the topics that we all care about so that everyone can share and receive feedback to improve their work.

Modeling Assistance Workshop

Publishing Assistance Workshop

Held after the conference, seasoned mentors provide authors with one-on-one guidance and expertise in the development of their manuscript for submission to top academic journals in their chosen field. Expert mentors offer help in identifying appropriate journals, navigating the publishing process for their research,  and improving their papers to increase the odds of strong reviews and acceptance for publication.

Modeling Assistance Workshop

Seasoned mentors offer conference participants the opportunity to obtain one-on-one coaching on specific System Dynamics modeling questions. Questions may relate to a System Dynamics model that you are thinking about, studying, or developing.  All levels of modeling background are welcome, from beginner to advanced.  This is the perfect opportunity to get help from experts in the field.

System Dynamics Conference Model Expo

Model Expo

So, should you share your model? Definitely! Modelers who wish to share their work will have an opportunity to show their model to others and let them interact with it.  The Model Expo is a chance to talk to people about how the models work, get important comments, and just show off.

Special Meetings

Ideal for networking. Meet peers from different Special Interest Groups, Chapters, and other groups.

2023 conference

2023 International System Dynamics Conference

July 23-27, 2023

Adapting in the Face of Change

The disruptions caused by the global pandemic, climate change, social and racial inequities, nationalist politics, and a rapidly urbanizing population leave us facing a future that calls for adaptation and intervention in complex systems. For the 2023 conference, we invite papers that address the following questions:

What are the drivers of current sociological behaviors and how do we achieve the new equilibriums we are seeking?

How do models help us build both hindsight about past behaviors and dynamic hypotheses about our future?

How do applications of system dynamics models help shape policies that seek to build an equitable, sustainable future that includes health and well-being for both people and ecosystems?
