Energy

The System Dynamics Society created the Special Interest Group on Energy, i.e. ‘Energy SIG’, in October 2006 with the prime objective to further the development of a holistic view on energy policy and energy systems by use of systems thinking and use of system dynamics tools. Areas of interest for this SIG are the development and application of system dynamics in:

  • Energy systems technology development modeling

  • Technology assessment

  • Energy impact on sustainable development

  • Energy economics

  • Investment analysis

  • Energy market modelling

  • Energy regulations and policies

  • Environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment

  • Renewable energy technology and economics

  • Energy-environmental policy design and assessment

  • Institutional questions related to Energy, Sustainable Development and Environment Protection with direct application to systems of direct relevance to the energy sector.

Annual meeting

The Energy SIG annual meeting takes place at the International Conference of the System Dynamics Society. Please check the schedule of the current conference for further information. The representatives will inform you about all activities and the meeting will elect the leadership team / representatives for the upcoming term (until the next annual meeting).

Current activities

We try to be the first contact point for system dynamics related energy topics. For this you may contact us (energy@systemdynamics.org) and become a member of our LinkedIn discussion group where we are posting questions, discussion topics and important dates. It is important that you help us bring movements into the group and that you help us keep discussions vibrant. See the how to contribute section and the list of SD-energy interested researchers and practitioners for additional activities.

Publications

We are currently working on a tool for submission of publication information. In this way you can inform the Energy SIG about your recent publications.

Journals

This journal list summarizes journals in which system dynamics work has been published. It is a simple list and should serve as starting point for scholars who are looking for journals to publish their work. The Energy SIG did not rank these journals and does not recommend any journal for the work to be published. By this list we meant to offer you an incomplete overview of journals where System Dynamics work has been published. We derived this list from publications of Energy SIG members and own literature research:

How to join the Energy SIG

Membership in the Energy SIG is open to all, not just members of the System Dynamics Society (SDS). To join…

SDS members and those with a pre-existing profile can visit https://systemdynamics.org/society-sigs/ and click on the “Update your SIG (and Chapter) preferences here” Form. Username and password are required.

If you do not have a profile in the SDS system, you can visit and fill out the New User Form.

You will be added to the Energy SIG mailing list and eligible to join our regular meetings.

How to contact/contribute

We meet every month via Skype to review progress, fulfill the duties in regard towards the SD society and to coordinate next steps. We are actively seeking contributors and volunteers for a variety of tasks. If you’re interested please contact us. Especially, inform us about your new energy related publications – even though they are not in English! We would like to collect articles and a list of Journals that have already included some SD related topics. In this way it makes it easier for newcomers to know where to publish. If you would like to inform about a newly published paper, job offers or if you’re looking for some support: send an e-mail to energysig_systemdynamics@googlegroups.com. This will be sent to everyone on our mailing list.
For general inquiries please email energy@systemdynamics.org

LinkedIn

We encourage you to join our LinkedIn group and participate in the interchange with SIG members and other practitioners, it can be found HERE. Simply go there and request to join. Note that it requires a LinkedIn profile.

Membership

Membership in the Energy SIG is open to all members of the System Dynamics Society as well as non-members who are System Dynamics practitioners and SIG supporters in the business, academic, and government sectors. System Dynamics Society members and other individuals wishing to join the Energy SIG may do so by following the directions under “How to Join the Energy SIG” above. Energy SIG members who are also System Dynamics Society members will be identifiable/searchable in the Society’s membership directory.

List of SD-energy interested researchers and practitioners: To help you finding other SD-energy researchers or practitioners we started an overview list. For this we need your help: please shortly fill in your name, affiliation, areas of interest and a link to your research group/company. You can find the google document here.

Communications

The activities and current list of Energy SIG members will be reported annually to the System Dynamics Society. To maintain its recognition by the Society as an established SIG, a minimum of six System Dynamics Society members must be registered as SIG members on an ongoing basis.
The Energy SIG will communicate with the System Dynamics Society Policy Council through written reports submitted to the VP Membership.
Reporting of Energy SIG activities and events as well as other matters of interest to the SIG members will be provided through the web site for the SIG. The Society provides the space for this site and provides technical support on an as-needed basis, but the maintenance of its content will be the responsibility of the SIG members.
