Abstract

This session presents real world case studies on System Dynamics Applications and Sustainable System Development for building livable cities that make human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable with SDGs.  Experiences on setting policies and urban management system for Taipei City and educational programs of European Capitals of Culture and regional revitalization are addressed in the case studies.

This session explains the concept of a city-based sustainable ecosystem service that helps an international city to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of building a livable city and cultural development for social welfare. A sustainable system development (SSD) framework with the principles of Cultural Ecosystem Service Innovation (CESI) and case studies in Taipei City to support policy design, strategic development, public participation, and global value creation for building a livable city. Management implications were addressed to promote multiple positive feedbacks with the government, enterprises, and the general public and jointly strive to support the development of a livable and sustainable city.

The world is becoming increasingly urbanized that more than half the world’s population has been living in cities, with expectation to rise to 60% by 2030. Cities and metropolitan areas are powerhouses of economic growth—contributing about 60% of global GDP. However, they also account for about 70% of global carbon emissions and over 60% of resource use. To respond to those challenges, more than 150 countries have developed national urban plans, with almost half of them in the implementation phase. Ensuring that those plans are well executed will help cities grow in a more sustainable and inclusive manner.  This session invites the principles of Urban Dynamics and Sustainable System Development for knowledge sharing and systems leadership in actions.  We hope to promote sustainable cities and community-based development with educational efforts.
