We invite you to join us, virtually, for the XVIII Latin American System Dynamics Conference. System Dynamics is a computer-aided approach to policy analysis and design which applies to any dynamic systems characterized by interdependence, mutual interaction, information feedback, and circular causality. This year, to keep all of you safe, we will meet in a virtual conference.

The Fish Banks Seminar
Thursday, October 29th 10 AM-1 PM Eastern US time
by Jason Jay, Senior Lecturer and Director of the Sustainability Initiative at the MIT Sloan School of Management
Join us on Thursday, October 29th from 10am – 1pm EST for Fish Banks, the classic web-based simulation developed by Dennis Meadows. Jason Jay will lead participants through this participatory game in which players manage their own fishing companies as they compete with others to achieve a profitable venture. Together team players will strategize about buying and selling ships, where to fish, how best to manage fleets without depleting fish stocks all while in competition with neighboring teams.
This seminar is perfect for general audiences who would like an introduction to Systems Thinking though a sustainability lens, but will include a deeper debrief that includes facilitator tips to help potential future game facilitators understand how to tailor and deliver this experience for a variety of audiences.
This seminar will be FREE for Members and just $25 for non-members. It’s a great way to learn more about System Dynamics and this fantastic simulation.
Jason Jay is a Senior Lecturer and Director of the Sustainability Initiative at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He teaches courses on leadership, strategy, and innovation for sustainable business. Jason engages students and alumni in hands-on projects with leading companies and organizations. These efforts help build a community of innovators for sustainability that includes MIT students and alumni, faculty and researchers, with partners in business, government, NGOs, and hybrid organizations. Jason’s research focuses on how people navigate the tensions inherent in the quest for sustainability, as they simultaneously pursue their own self-interest and the flourishing of human and other life.
The Fish Banks board game is available for facilitators to purchase. We also offer a set of boards that can be borrowed by Society members.

In several previous monthly meetings, we’ve had a lot of fruitful discussion and interaction, some of which has led to innovative collaboration among SIG members. This month we would like to highlight these successes and propel our collaboration forward with a roundtable discussion/open forum on teaching and learning System Dynamics in Ag & Food contexts. Below is a tentative agenda/topics of conversation. We look forward to seeing everyone there next week!

50-55 minutes: Discussion on teaching and learning SD (sample topics include)
- when teaching SD in Ag&Food circles, what has worked and what hasn’t?
- what SD resources have been most helpful to your learning and/or teaching experience?
- For Ag&Food systems courses, what are the most relevant learning objectives and how can we/should we get students there?
- Besides the class simulation games (Beer Game, Fish Banks, Peoples Express, etc) what other games if any do you use in teaching/learning? What would make an effective simulation game for Ag&Food classes and studies?

Dynamic Decision Making in Operations Management

Abstract: Dynamic decision problems are common in operations applications. However, solving them optimally is likely to challenge the cognitive abilities of most human decision makers. Many human decision makers are likely to simplify the problem in some way, however there are a variety of plausible simplifying heuristics, including both simple static decision rules, and more sophisticated forward-looking heuristics. This study considers a range of dynamic decision problems (including technology adoption, capacity allocation and search problems), and experimentally measures which approaches to solving dynamic decision problems are the most common. Specifically, we consider three questions: Do more people use static or forward-looking approaches? Which heuristics are most common, and does it vary by task? Are there individual traits that predict decision strategy? We find that sophisticated forward-looking strategies are commonly used in the technology adoption and capacity allocation problems, while by contrast simpler static decision rules are prevalent in search and stopping problems. There is very little relationship in the approach an individual takes across tasks, however score on the Cognitive Reflection Test has some predictive power (particularly for the simplest tasks).

The South Africa System Dynamics Chapter (SASDC) aims to promote the interchange of learning, research and real-world application of systems thinking and system dynamics approaches in understanding and managing complex real world problems facing South Africa and Africa as a whole. The SASDC is hosting the 8th Annual System Dynamics Conference in South Africa (8ASDC) to create a networking platform for systems thinkers and system dynamicists to present novel work which contributes to systems thinking and system dynamics theory, methodology or empirics. Papers should contribute to the conference theme of Integrated System Dynamics for Investing in the Future. Due to the unforeseen impact of the COVID19 virus and various measures which have been put in place to prevent inadvertent spreading of the virus, this year our conference will be of a mixed virtual and physical participatory nature. Due to the numerous efforts on system dynamics modelling of the virus, one of the key tracks for the 2020 conference will be on Health Dynamics. Other themes include:
Political & organizational dimensions of sustainable prosperity / Humanitarian Dynamics/ Education/ Social and psychological understandings/ Transport and Mobility/ Natural Resource Management/ Transformative Technology/ Finance/ Governance Transitions
Papers must not be under submission elsewhere and will be included in accredited proceedings, which will be electronically available to all SASDC members.

Rebecca began her career as a strategy consultant at Monitor Company, honed her skills as a systems thinking facilitator at GKA Inc, worked as VP of Affordable Housing Acquisitions for Boston Financial, and built her own Systems Thinking consultancy through which she was a key contributor to the ReThink Health Initiative, Climate Interactive’s Agritopia, and Dialogos’ work for the US Forestry Service. She has spent more than 25 years supporting corporate and philanthropic clients including Vistaprint, Elizabeth Dole Foundation, AT&T, Ford, Smithkline Beecham, Shell, Amoco, and USDA. Her expertise is using collaborative causal mapping and System Dynamics simulation models to help multi-sector collaboratives think together better. Rebecca trained in Systems Dynamics in Jay Forrester’s Pre-College Education Project and John Sterman’s class while pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering and an MBA from MIT. She has served on the Society Policy Council and been a guest lecturer at MIT, Wharton, Dartmouth, and Brown. When not working as a systems thinking evangelist, Rebecca loves to travel the world. Pre-covid travels included Mexico, Chile, Morocco, Brazil, Uganda and Iceland to spend time with school children, whale sharks, camels, street art, gorillas and waterfalls. When stuck at home, she enjoys gardening, swimming, dancing, and renovating properties.

Join host Mohammad Jalali (Harvard University) for a panel discussion about COVID-19 modeling. Panelists Jeroen Struben (emlyon business school), Hazhir Rahmandad (MIT Sloan), Jack Homer (Homer Consulting), and Navid Ghaffarzadegan (Virginia Tech) will then share their work in 10-minute presentations. This will be followed by discussion and Q&A which explores the question of what makes a COVID-19 model useful.
