The working relationship between Wiley and the Society's office has continued to be both productive and efficient, with the ongoing relationship between the various contacts within Wiley and the SDS is, without exception, very good. The system set up between the journals admin department (Sarah Stevens [email protected]) and the SDS (Roberta Spencer) for the transfer of information about renewals and new members is working well and there appear to be few, if any, queries.

Our target audience is, of course, made up of researchers, educators, consultants, and practitioners who are using system dynamics.

Society membership is increasing at a very encouraging rate, and is clearly an attractive package for people working or researching within the field of system dynamics.

The forecast from Blackwell's Information Service for all academic journals across the board in 2000 is better than for 1999. Electronic package deals have gone down well in the industry, especially where there is free electronic access with print subscriptions. Here take up has more than doubled since 1998. There are signs that libraries are prepared to pay for key electronic content and packages, but there is also evidence that libraries are unwilling to take material for which there is no interest.

SDR is therefore benefiting from the fact that free electronic access is available for all institutional subscribers, and, with growing success, for SDS members too.

Wiley also now has a pro-active sales team in place, who are approaching key institutions with bespoke Enhanced Access Licences based around the idea of multi-user and multi-site access.

As reported in February, two additional heads are working exclusively on our management and finance journals. Melissa Cox ([email protected]) is responsible for the marketing and promotion of SDR, and Graham Russel ([email protected]) works as Digital Development Editor. Both Melissa and Graham have brought extensive experience and new enthusiasm to the team, and will allow us to follow up leads and avenues to promote and market the journal, and develop further electronic initiatives.

We will continue to look for ways to increase the citation coverage, and any additional suggestions for coverage are welcome.

The membership take up of the electronic access to journal is working very smoothly. With this access, subscribers are able to view full text, on line, dating back to 1997 with the abstracts also available for 1996.

Some Wiley journals are experimenting with electronic pre-prints as part of Wiley EarlyView®. The benefits here are that material can be paginated and made available to online subscribers very soon after an author returns their corrected proofs. This could effectively speed up publication and create a paginated and therefore citable article.

Some of the ways in which Wiley InterScience, is currently adding value to its journal content (for example pre-print publishing and article-by article publishing), are helped considerably by the receipt of disks. More generally, raising the percentage of disk submissions from authors will bring these important benefits:

 

• Speed: The early availability of a digital version of the manuscript means copyeditors and typesetters can immediately get to work on the manuscript, and so avoid the delay involved in re-keying.
• Service: Authors will feel reassured, justifiably, that we are making best use of their already considerable effort in creating a digital version of their article, and we will avoid the need to chase them for a disk after acceptance of their manuscript.
• Quality: By using author-supplied disks, typographical errors introduced by re-keying are minimised resulting in a more accurate proof and greater satisfaction for the author, as well as a reduction in proof correction times for the author, the journal Editor and Wiley production staff.

Our objective is to raise the level of manuscript submissions accompanied by an electronic version to 100%. This is an attainable aim and will be coupled with an increased emphasis on this issue through amendments to the instructions for authors in the journal and on Wiley InterScience.

The SDS has an enhanced web presence at www.albany.edu/cpr/sds/, and SDR is available online at Wiley InterScience to full subscribers ( http://www.interscience.wiley.com/jpages/0883-7066/) Online access includes ALL available archival years of full text, tables of contents and abstracts at no extra charge. In addition SDS members, with their 2000 subscription will also receive access to SDR on Wiley InterScience.

The number of SDS members accessing SDR online continues to grow well. This is very encouraging.

Wiley has played a leading role in the development of CrossRef, a reference linking service formed by the world's leading scholarly publishers. This unprecedented collaboration allows researchers (with subscriptions) to click on a reference in a journal article and move directly to the content of a cited journal article, typically located on a different server and published by a different publisher.

Such linking will enable readers to gain access to logically related articles with one or two clicks - an objective widely accepted amongst researchers as a natural and necessary part of scientific and scholarly publishing in the digital age.

The CrossRef service uses Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to link from the references to the articles cited. DOIs actually work as unique electronic identifiers of where material can be found on the web, unlike URLs which often change.
